On March 15 2007, The River Valley Alliance unveiled a draft Plan of Action for the Capital Region River Valley Park. For over 10 years the shareholder municipalities of The RVA worked together to formulate this draft plan for a world-class metropolitan river front park that would extend from the Town of Devon in the West, through the Counties of Leduc and Parkland, through the City of Edmonton, through the Counties of Sturgeon and Strathcona, and to the City of Fort Saskatchewan in the east.

Traffic Justice

March was a bad month for pedestrians in Edmonton. A series of collisions resulting in a number of citizens being injured or killed while crossing in marked crosswalks highlights the lack of priority and respect for pedestrians in our current auto dependant culture.

Certainly Walkable Edmonton has a great deal of work to do to try and have an impact, but we are heartened by the partners working towards the same end - a city where it is easy and safe to be a pedestrian.

Locally the Capital Region Intersection Safety Partnership is working towards similiar goals. Check out their website at: http://www.drivetolive.ca/

In the U.S., the National Centre for Bicycling and Walking has started a Traffic Justice Initiative to "redefine our societal perspective on motor vehicle crashes, and substantially reduce their occurrence."

More Connections

Transportation Utility Corridor Trails

The Transportation Department will be hosting an Open House in late April of this year to present the proposed revised trail connections to the North Saskatchewan River Bridge at Anthony Henday Drive. The combination multi-use/paved trail will link the Terwillegar Drive Pedestrian Bridge to the pedestrian crossing beneath the North Saskatchewan River Bridge and Cameron Heights. Concessions by the Province will allow this trail to be paved, but that has required a change in the location and grade of the trail.

Sidewalk Strategy

The City Sidewalk Strategy has wrapped up the initial stages of public consultation in a year long process to identify the "missing links" in the sidewalk infrastructure and a process for prioritizing their construction or repair.

The principles developed by the stakeholder groups involved spoke very clearly to promoting Walkability in Edmonton. There is still opportunity for individuals and groups to have input, and there will be additional public meetings to speak to the results of the initial work of the project.

Bicycle Transportation Plan

The City of Edmonton has recently retained Stantec Consulting to undertake an update to the City's Bicycle Transportation Plan (BTP). The BTP is one of the guiding documents for the Transportation Department, dealing with how bicycles are integrated into Edmonton's transportation system. Route expansion, maintenance and engineering standards will be examined, along with bike parking and connections to transit.

The update will commence in March 2007 and stakeholder outreach will occur throughout May and June. The final plan will go to City Council for approval in February 2008. If you would like to be involved as a stakeholder, please contact Claire Ellick at 496-2615 or claire.ellick@edmonton.ca.
