How can I contact other members?
You can post notices in the discussion forums where people who visit the site can read and reply to your message
or
send a message to the linnews listserv which will distribute it to more than 1200 people on the list.
How can I contribute documents to the database?
Its easy to contribute documents! Choose any documents which you feel are of value to your colleagues. Remove any confidential information from them and make sure that your organization is identified on the document, along with the date it was written. Attach it to a message to info@lin.ca, or mail or fax it to the LIN office. We will do the rest - index and abstract it, convert it to pdf format and insert it into the database.
Your association can assist LIN with the collection of documents and awareness of the database through publicity, conferences, promotional campaigns etc.
Your non-profit organization can make its documents available in full text in the database or can list its for sale publications with an email link for ordering.
How can I join LIN?
Joining LIN is as simple as registering on the website.
If you tell us your interests, in the near future we will be able to send you information that is targetted to your specific needs.
We rely on our members to submit documents for the database, contribute to the discussions in our forums, and to spread the word about LIN!
How can I use the full text documents I retrieve?
Documents may be downloaded or printed (single copy only). You are free to edit the documents you download and use them for your own projects, but you should show your appreciation by providing credit to the originator of the document. You must not sell the document or make a profit from reproducing it. You must not copy, extract, summarize or distribute downloaded documents outside of your own organization in a manner which competes with or substitutes for the distribution of the database by LIN.
What do I do if I can't find the information in the database?
The database does not contain published books or articles. There are many sources for obtaining information on these items. You can go to a public library, or search any of several hundred commercial databases or CD-ROMS. Your public librarian can assist you in identifying the best sources for the information you need. If you prefer, contact the LIN office for customized information services. Staff will identify the best sources, do the searching for you and obtain the actual documents you need, within your deadline. The fees for this service are quite modest in comparison to the costs of your time.
What is the National Recreation Database?
The National Recreation database is a project endorsed by the Interprovincial Sport and Recreation Council (ISRC) representing provincial and territorial sport and recreation ministries across Canada.
The database was designed to fill a gap in readily available literature. Its focus is on practical, proven and frequently unpublished information which is not available from traditional sources such as libraries and bookstores. It is the kind of information one obtains from one’s colleagues. These documents are in full text, and are available for downloading free of charge by anyone who logs onto the LIN website. Examples of the types of documents include:
- research papers
- administrative policies
- program descriptions
- job descriptions
- waiver forms
- manuals
- conference and workshop presentations
- bibliographies
- training manuals
The database also contains a centralized listing of publications for sale from non-profit leisure and recreation organizations, with an email link to the source organization for ordering.
Access to the database and downloading of documents is free to anyone on the Internet. For those without Internet access, the LIN office staff will search the database and provide paper copies of documents for a modest fee to cover copying, shipping and handling charges.
Why can't I get the full text of some documents in the database?
Some of the documents listed in the database are for sale by recreation related organizations. You can contact them directly from LIN, by email or by linking to an order form, for more information on ordering.
