This Act sets out a municipality’s responsibility for establishing a fire safety program and for the provision of fire protection services. It delineates various options including appointing a community fire safety team or establishing a fire department.
The Act describes the duties of a fire marshal and fire coordinators and stipulates certain bylaws that Councils may elect to pass such as regulating fire prevention, the setting of open fires and the designation of fire routes.
The Act also sets out the rights and obligations of fire officials to enter premises in states of emergency or to investigate potential fires. It also provides clear direction related to fire officials’ powers during inspections, the need for warrants and other legal obligations associated with the execution of their duties.
Firemen’s employment and labour relations issues are also outlined in the Act. Working conditions, collective bargaining and collective agreements are addressed.
