Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards(PAFSS) is targeted to facility owner/operators, managers, lifeguards, instructors, government and other interested parties who are responsible for maintaining a safe environment for customers and staff.
The PAFSS presents the Lifesaving Society's recommendations, and refers aquatic facility owners/operators to other codes, regulations, statutes or standards that should be considered when developing safe operating practices for public aquatic facilities.
The PAFSS are used by the Society when conducting Aquatic Safety Audits for public facilities. The Society references these standards when preparing expert witness reports or providing testimony at fatality inquiries and lawsuits when consulted to help establish the required Standard of Care.
Current regulations and legislation governing public aquatic facilities such as community swimming pools and water-parks does not cover all of the issues which owners and operators face on a day-to-day basis. These issues, if not addressed, may be a source of risk and contribute ultimately to a serious injury or fatality. To minimize risk, an owner/operator needs to understand what these risk-issues are, and the accepted standards in that particular area of operation.
The Lifesaving Society has developed the Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards which can contribute significantly to improved levels of safety in aquatic facilities. These standards are a result of Society research into safety and risk management practices across Canada and around the world. These standards also reflect real operational experience and recommendations from the Society's Trainers and affiliate facilities.
