Abstract
Social scientists in the mountain national parks are collecting data on how humans use the landscape they share with ‘species at risk’. At this stage, the research primarily focuses on areas inhabited by caribou. This presentation, from the 2009 Parks Conference hosted by Alberta Recreation and Parks Association provides some of the insights on field techniques and results gathered in 2008 in the Tonquin Valley in Jasper and Mosquito Creek in Banff. Most importantly, scientists are looking at ways to integrate the social and natural science data in a way that will provide managers with the comprehensive and transferable knowledge needed to make informed decisions critical to protecting species at risk.
