World Heritage Status: Implications for Tourism Development, Heritage Conservation and Local Communities

Author: Halpenny, Elizabeth

Abstract
Assigning World Heritage status to a natural or cultural site can bring both positive and negative impacts to that site and the region in which it is situated. Using case studies from around the world, this presentation from the 2009 Parks Conference hosted by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association, outlines some of these impacts. Special emphasis is paid to the impacts of the World Heritage brand on tourism development at heritage sites and their surrounding regions. Little research has been conducted on the role of World Heritage status in marketing. Studies that have been published will be discussed. Implications for Canadian-based World Heritage sites and the regions they are adjacent to will be outlined. A research agenda is briefly presented that is designed to explore the impact of World Heritage branding.
