Accessibility of Alberta's Natural Areas

Author: Wein, Ross

Abstract
The range of challenges faced by individuals and their caregivers within the disability community is so striking that some park administrators feel the challenges are too great and it is too expensive to implement universal design in Alberta parks. Others simply say “We don’t have much call to accommodate these people!”. Of course “these people” do not come because the obstacles are too great even if planning for a visit was easy – which it is not. This presentation  from the 2009 Parks Conference hosted by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association, introduces this group of citizens and their needs, provides planning assistance on park renovations, and provides some examples of approaches to attracting these citizens to parks.
