Land Care - An Educational Journey
Author:
Lee-Carswell, Anna
The idea of introducing students to different perspectives and ways of caring for the land arose a decade ago through the Waterton Biosphere Reserve. For the past five years, students and teachers have explored different perspectives of land management from an Aboriginal, Rancher and the National Parks perspective. This program aims to increase their understanding of how important it is for neighbours to work together to maintain a healthy ecosystem. Another objective of the program is to build relationships with local Aboriginal peoples and ranchers by providing an opportunity for them to share their perspectives. This program helps build mutual awareness and understanding of land-use issues and decisions that affect residents of the Crown of the Continent ecosystem. Presentation at the 2009 Parks Conference hosted by the Alberta Parks and Recreation Association.
