Parks Victoria was established in 1997 by bringing together a number of different park management agencies responsible for protected areas, urban parks and waterways. This significant decision resulted in a single agency being responsible for an extremely diverse park system, including national and state parks, wilderness areas, marine national parks, urban parks, historic sites and waterways.
The forging of different park management cultures and approaches has fostered a range of new initiatives to address some of the major emerging park management challenges. Some of these include a new approach to managing parks within broader landscapes, creation of new partnerships with “non-traditional” stakeholders, more active engagement with Indigenous communities, innovative research and evaluation initiatives and the Healthy Parks Healthy People program to highlight the connections between a healthy environment and healthy communities. This was a keynote presentation at the 2009 Parks Conference hosted by Alberta Recreation and Parks Association.
