Get plenty of exercise to improve pregnancy, doctors say
Description
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, exercise can offer benefits from weight control and reduced discomfort to easier, faster labor and postnatal recovery. Many expectant mothers, however, are concerned about the safety of continuing or beginning an exercise routine.
"The overarching message is that regular exercise is important for your health and the baby's health," explained Dr. Roger Harms, a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist with Mayo Clinic. "In these days of a genuine obesity epidemic, it's more important than ever to keep with an exercise routine."
Women may have to vary their routines depending on the stage of pregnancy, such as to accommodate the fatigue common in the first trimester or the increasing bulk in the third.
Shelby Sheehan-Bernard, McClatchy-Tribune, July 5, 2012
