REACH for the Rainbow was initially started in 1983 by two parents who planned a day at Ontario Place to recognize the uniqueness of children with disabilities. REACH for the Rainbow day was held for 9 years, but in 1988 land was offered by a service club to open a camping program for children with disabilities and their siblings. Rather than run an individual camp program requiring children to travel from all areas of the province, the idea was formulated to work with already existing programs to provide opportunities for children who have disabilities within typical camp settings. Children with disabilities throughout Ontario would be given the same opportunity to choose from a variety of typical camps, and attend with their peers and siblings through REACH for the Rainbow's program. Most importantly, families could enjoy much needed respite time. This was the beginning of Project Rainbow, the program component of REACH for the Rainbow which began to initiate and develop relationships with camps.
