Porter, Gordon
The author gives the account of a boy with hearing impairment who was sent from his home in New Brunswick to a residential school for the hearing impaired in Nova Scotia where he was not happy and did not make progress. At his parents' request he was admitted to a local school where arrangements were made to hire a support person skilled in sign language. The boy made considerable progress and graduated from a local high school as well as participating in sports and community events. The article goes on to describe how an inclusive environment was created in Woodstock, New Brunswick and the changes that were made to bring this about. Benefits to disabled and non-disabled students are noted. Originally published in Journal of Leisurability vol. 23, #3.
