Injuries rank as the leading cause of death in Canada for people between the ages of 1 and 44 years. 90% of these accidents were preventable. In 1992 Dr. Robert Conn gave up his career as a heart surgeon to conduct research on this situation and has developed several innovative programs for teens that deliver the message that injuries are preventable, and that positive choices can be made to minimize the likelihood of being hurt, or even killed. Teachers can play a role in driving the issue of injury prevention forward and encouraging the smart risk messages promoted by HEROES,one of the programs developed by the Canadian Injury Prevention Foundation.
