Integrating education and leisure: conflict and the community school

Abstract: This study is concerned with a community approach to integrating education and leisure within the context of a secondary school, and is based on a case study of Western Hailes Education Centre (WHEC) in Edinburgh. Some of the conflicts and contradictions inherent in a community-school approach to leisure and education are examined by focusing on the differing attitudes and expectations of respondent groups to ‘education’ and ‘leisure’. While confirming the ideological and resource constraints imposed by statutory schooling, the study also reveals the relative power of local residents compared to the difficult nexus position of the ‘progressive’ professionals involved.
