Abstract: The majority of young people start to consume alcohol or smoke cannabis between the ages of 12 and 16. This is the age at which young people often go out for the first time, and when the influence of parents decreases while that of friends increases. When creating a personal social life it seems that experimenting with stimulants is a part of this phase. However, there is a growing concern about the use of alcohol among young people. Several recent studies show that students not only drink more, but also start drinking at a younger age (Hibell et al, 2004, 2007). In addition, there is a growing trend that young people drink more excessively. This report examines how friends, and the way people spend their leisure time, have an influence on substance use, especially heavy alcohol consumption.
