Planning Parks Where They Are Needed Most
Presenters: Justin Ellis and Tim Shah
With the aim to ensure park systems enhance the well-being of individuals, communities and the natural environment, Stantec recently developed a comprehensive GIS-based municipal park planning tool. The tool, the first of its kind in North America, was created to identify service gaps and redevelopment priorities in 26 cities in Massachusetts that are deemed to be socially and economically disadvantaged. With guidance from the new Framework for Recreation in Canada, the tool was designed to incorporate a range of data to prioritize park locations that reflect the needs of socially disadvantaged groups, obese populations, and neighbourhoods lacking connection with nature and recreational opportunities. The tool has potential to be re-applied in Alberta to inform municipal park planning and facilitate recreation opportunities for residents and visitors.
