Scanning: Factors Affecting Aquatic Staff

Peter Mumford

This session reviews the physiology behind how the eye works for a life guard, the concepts of “inattentive blindness”, and the factors that inhibit a lifeguard’s ability to properly recognize a victim. Topics include glare and refraction of light, turbidity and agitation of water (splashing), poor victim simulation during staff training, and more.

Presentation from the Parks and Recreation Ontario 2010 Aquatics Conference
