Abstract: This study attempts to provide some insight into the experience of unemployment from the perspective of young people themselves. The school's role in preparing young people for society is considered, and a prospective view of post-school life by pupils in their final year of compulsory schooling is examined. Results indicated that while schools continue to place a stress on vocational preparation, pupils did not appear to believe they had been given an adequate understanding of work and unemployment. Further, there was little continuation of school-based leisure activities into post-school life.
