Aboriginal Youth Cycling

Organization Sponsor: Aboriginal Youth Cycling

Program Description

At times, sports can be used to better one’s future by drawing on the strength of one’s past. That is the theme that drives Aboriginal Youth Cycling (AYC), the newest addition to the program line-up at the Burnaby Velodrome.
A unique program, AYC, encourages Aboriginal youth to develop confidence and leadership skills while riding on one of the few indoor Velodromes in the Northern Hemisphere. In AYC we want to foster an atmosphere that enables youth to draw on the strength of their cultural heritage and, at the same time, show them the benefits of riding as a recreational activity and as a healthy lifestyle.

Impact Of Program:

About 36 young people to make the trek to the track from their homes in East Van, North Vancouver and other parts of Burnaby. About a half dozen are now regulars at the Friday afternoon sessions.

Key Elements Towards Success:

We are an organization dedicated to building self confidence, leadership and fitness in aboriginal youth through the sport of cycling. We provide meaningful programming that allows Native youth (Status and Non-Status) the opportunity to grow as individuals by participating in all aspects of cycling in a fun and accepting atmosphere. We know through experience that sport can provide direction in life and we want to empower participants to use cycling as a catalyst to increase interest in their own communities, culture and lives.

This program began 2011.
