Program Description

Flooded basketball courts make good rinks in winter. Guysborough Municipality create two rinks for community use during the winter months. They place wood edging around the courts and put a liner in place then flood the court. One is the basketball court at school and the other is at the community center.The Dept. of Public Works help to build and maintain the rinks. Many local residence help to keep the rink clear of snow. Both rinks are well used by the community.

Having the Municipality involved in the creation and maintenance of the rinks make it very successful.

Impact Of Program: 

The school is able to add skating to their physical activity classes and after school programs. Both rinks are used by the alot by the community.

Key Elements Towards Success: 

This project provides a free activity for school and the community. Skate equipment exchange program also helps people have access to equipment. Community volunteers also help to maintain the rink. If there is a lot of snow the Public Works Dept. helps.

Challenges To Meet Them: 

The weather is always a challenge. The ice surface may have to be resurfaced after occasional thaws.
