Bike & Hike Day Camp for Junior Youth

Program Description

A Bike & Hike Program for 12 - 15 yr. olds. Within a daycamp format youth learn biking rules of the road, community standards, rider assessment, bike check. Includes day trips to various destinations, games, sports, points of interest, museums visits, swimming, trail rides, etc.,travel everywhere by bike. Summer leaders are trained to assist with rides.

Funding Sources: 

HRM Kids Programs subsidy, community, parents, loan bikes or give them

Strategies For Sustainability: 

Program pays for itself.
Leaders come on as staff in following years.

Impact Of Program: 

Program has been full for every week all summer long for four years. Always many repeats. Youth have improved fitness levels, bike on their own, use bikes as transportation. It opens their world.

Evaluation Tools: 

Each participant fills out an evaluation form.

Key Elements Towards Success: 

Fun, adventure, new places, high activity

Challenges To Meet Them: 

Being able to safely move with groups through streets. Strict adherence to rules is required.

Length and Stage of Project: 

4 years and ongoing every summer.
