Boating Safety - On Board Program

Organization Sponsor: Canadian Red Cross Society

Program Description

In 1999 the Red Cross responded to a request from the Canadian Coast Guard to assist in the implementation of the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) program. We did so through our On Board program. As the PCOC program has grown, the number of program providers sanctioned by Transport Canada has increased to meet the market demands.

The Canadian Red Cross remains committed to the safety of Canadian boaters. We have determined that our resources will be more effectively allocated elsewhere under our expanding injury prevention mandate to reach those who participate in boating activities. As of December 31, 2008, the Canadian Red Cross On Board Program will no longer issue new PCO Cards.

The Canadian Red Cross has more than 60 years of water and boating safety experience. It is part of our mission to help keep people safe in, on and around the water. Red Cross encourages safe boating through our swimming lessons, National Lifejacket Day, and through the release of drowning statistics.
