Changing The Face of Hockey in Brampton: Attracting Newcomers

Organization Sponsor: Brampton Youth Hockey Association

Organization Partner: Brampton Sport Alliance

Program Description

TSN's program "That's Hockey" dropped by South Fletchers Sportsplex to show how Brampton Youth Hockey is attracting new Canadians to their program.

BRAMPTON YOUTH HOCKEY is Ontario's largest single community based non-profit hockey organization with a membership of approximately 4,000. When the numbers of players were starting to dwindle and the club seemed to be stagnating, VP Hockey Development Coach Julien Endrody went on the offensive and invited youth from every cultural background. The response was overwhelming and within three years, there was a waiting list for their Grassroots Hockey Program. The newcomer participants were thrilled and excelling at the new sport experience.

Not only were the kids coming to the rinks to play but the parents also came. The bigger story is how sports can be powerful tools for community development and the coming together of cultural groups that would not normally share a common experience. It has been an exciting experience using sport as a tool for outreach and community engagement, addressing the needs of our vibrant and diverse population. It also gives them the opportunity to explore the Canadian experience.
