Girls Healthy Living Week

Organization Sponsor: Chignecto Central Regional School Board

Program Description

The objective of this week is to encourage girls aged 9-17 in CCRSB (Nova, Cobequid, Chignecto and Celtic FOS) to engage in healthy lifestyles. We hope that this exposure to physical activity, health eating and emotional well being initiatives in the school will encourage young women to pursue life long participation in healthy lifestyles.

Schools, businesses, organizations and recreation departments within CCRSB host FREE healthy lifestyle events for girls during this week. By doing this, they will expose young girls to healthy living options in your community. The events are not limited to physical activity, but can also involve organizations promoting healthy eating, mental health, addictions, sexual health, and any other issue that is relevant in the lives of girls today.

Program Approximate Cost:

Free for participants

Funding Sources:

CAAWS WISE Fund, CCRSB Health Promoting Schools

Strategies For Sustainability:

12 grants of $300.00 each were provided to the schools so their activities could be continued until the end of the school year.

Impact Of Program:

75 different events were offered and 1700 girls participated. This program has become an annual event and is being copied by many other school boards.

Evaluation Tools:

A tracking form was sent out to the schools to keep record of participants and activities offered.

Key Elements Towards Success:

Promotion through the Physical Education Teachers in the schools worked well and being able to provide small funds to cover activity expenses was key to the success.

Challenges To Meet Them:

It was hoped that more community organizations would be involved but the promotion to these groups was not as effective as through the schools.

Length and Stage of Project:

This project was for 1 week only but activities have continued for 5 months till the end of the school year. It has become an annual event.
