Program Description

Girls Soar Physical Activity Week in Halifax Regional Municipality from March 24 to March 31. The objective of this week is to celebrate, motivate and educate females ages 9 to 16 about being physically active. As you are well aware, the current activity rate of young females is rather bleak. Physical Activity Week is an initiative of the Girls Soar sub-committee that works to help increase female participation in sport and recreation.

The 2006 event hosted varied organizations whose passionate and committed leaders delivered sessions in boxercise, yoga, skating, rock-climbing, nutrition, basketball, bike repair and bowling. As a result of these new special sessions, some girls joined the activity and became a regular participant. Subsequently new projects have been delivered
There was also good media support, namely from Breakfast Television which featured Girls Soar while on site at The Yoga Loft.

Letters have been sent to an impressive list of associates in education, recreation, libraries, not-for-profit organizations, corporations and small business asking them to participate - in their own creative way - in Girls Soar Physical Activity Week. Not-for-profit organizations are eligible to receive $100. In 2006 stakeholders responded favourably to these modest grants – just enough momentum to make their inspired ideas reality.
