Program Description

Turn young lives around through community based support. At-risk and/ore disengaged adolescents will gain self-confidence, experience a sense of belonging and work towards good physical and social health. This BGC InsideStrong program serves as an excellent example of the Boys & Girls Club core value of "collaboration," "we will work together with the public and private sector to create healthy community solutions for providing children and youth with what they need for optimal development." Through the collaborative efforts of the Boys and Girls Club, Caveman Strong, the Public and Separate School Boards, Cornwall Community Police and Youth Justice we can help make a difference in the lives of young people who may simply be in need of or desperate for role models, healthy physical outlets and people who care.
Students will participate on average three times per week during the academic year at the Caveman Strong gym located at 44 Pitt Street (the back of the old Standard Freeholder building) in Cornwall. Monday thru Friday, 11 a.m. – noon will be dedicated Boys & Girls Club InsideStrong program time.

Strategies For Sustainability:

For more than 100 years, Boys & Girls Clubs in communities across Canada have been helping young people to discover, develop and achieve their best potential as they grow to become Canada’s future adults, citizens and leaders, by engaging them in activities that help develop healthy minds and bodies. Belonging to a Boys & Girls Club is often a life changing experience as young people can build healthy, supportive relationships with caring adult role models which can deeply and positively influence the life path they choose.

Impact Of Program:

Caveman Strong works in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG to help get at-risk and disengaged youth active. Together we have worked to develop this program for over two years with tremendous success. Our new gym can accommodate many more youth-however, the program's ability to fund youth memberships is near capacity.

Evaluation Tools:

The gym atmosphere is friendly, positive and very encouraging and all the trainers are fun and outgoing and that is why I go to every class. They promote healthy living and after every workout I feel more confident not only in myself butt also with the new skills (strengths) they have taught me. I enjoy going to caveman strong and being part of a group of people who make me feel good about myself.

Key Elements Towards Success:

InsideStrong participants learn respect for themselves and for others by participating in, encouraging others, while being mentored in fitness, and in effort by role models and coaches who care. The sense of inclusion and belonging in this unique community gym environment has proven significant to these young people who are often on the "outside" or "fringes" of the regular school system. Many have never had the opportunity to participate in school or recreational sports and teams and to experience the sens of belonging to something unique. The opportunity to fully participate and function within a dynamic, coached fitness program positively impacts their self-esteem and confidence. Other positive outcomes including their newly discovered "can do" attitude and their own empowerment to make healthy life style choices have all been observed by parents, teachers and their coaches. The impact of this program will be measured by their improved education and social outcomes in the short term and their improved life outcomes in the long term.
