Program Description

The program has been designed to teach basic basketball skills to inner city youth (ages 12-14) in a basketball camp environment. The program was initiated by Basketball Manitoba together with NBA player Todd MacCulloch.
Each fall and spring, 10 inner city Winnipeg schools are selected to take part in the program. Each school is given a head coach that together with coaches from the school take the participants through 8 specific sessions. The program traditionally runs October through December out of the 10 Winnipeg schools.

Strategies For Sustainability: 

The schools are paid for rental space and the coaches in each school receive an honorarium. At the end of the session all participants receive a basketball and a T-shirt. The coaches also receive free sports gear.This program receives continued funding and promotion.

Ten schools a year are chosen with a total of 25 kids per school.

This program is popular because it has a local NBA star supporting it.

Challenges To Meet Them: 

Even with the funding sometimes finding schools and coaches is difficult. Schools are usually busy and to match gym times with coaches time is a challenge. Also getting girls to participate is at times difficult.
