Wild About Vancouver (WAV) Outdoor Education Festival is a free public festival offering practical ways to get children (and adults) outdoors more regularly. It is open to the public and aims to unite and create long-term sustainable Outdoor and Experiential Learning (OEL) networks for organizations, schools, youth programs, and the broader citizenry (including youth and First Nations) of Vancouver.
The Town Georgina in partnership with Jericho Youth Services is pleased to celebrate National Youth Week 2015, (May 1 -7, 2015). We will be offering a variety of recreational and sport activities for the youth of Georgina to participate and enjoy at no or minimal cost. May 1- The youth week festivities begin May 1 at the Georgina Ice Palace with the Jericho Youth Services Youth Dance. Youth ages 9-13 will be able to boogie to the beat and celebrate the start of National Youth Week.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) describes a community-based road safety program that aims to make a child’s journey to and from school safer. It may also encompass other goals such as reducing child pedestrian injuries, promoting safety, creating a cleaner environment by reducing traffic congestion, and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
The MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutritionâ€¦ Do It!) Program is a community intervention aimed to empower families of overweight and obese children to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. This program combines all the elements known to be important when treating and preventing overweight and obesity in children, including family involvement, behaviour change, practical education in nutrition, and increasing physical activity. MEND is not a diet, nor is designed for rapid weight loss.
The experimental intervention took place over one school year (10 months) at low SES schools in Australia. The primary aims were to prevent weight gain, reduce screen time, and maintain physical activity levels among ten-year-old students. Secondary objectives were to increase children’s enjoyment of physical activity, and to improve movement skills related to childhood games and sports.
An Aboriginal Youth Mountain Biking Program has been initiated by a group of mountain bike enthusiasts to support and encourage Aboriginal youth and communities to participate and excel in the sport of mountain biking.
The Sisters in Action program provides an opportunity to young Muslim women to engage in social recreational activities, sports and opportunities to develop skills through mentorship.
